Signbank is a website which acts as a dictionary of hand signs for the deaf. It has videos which clearly show how to form hand signs. There is no audio on the site. This may not be too much of a concern in a site designed for the deaf, except that deafness tends to vary with the individual, there are degrees of hearing and even a feint audio perception of the word pattern may be an essential component in correctly interpreting and learning a sign. The site caters for family, friends and those who work with the deaf, also. The addition of sound files or even music could be of value. Signbank acts as a dictionary, the user required to type in a search box. This produces good results but, according to Dr Greg Yates, a professor of educational psychology at the University of South Australia, ‘recognition is easy but recall is hard’(2004). An improvement to the site might involve including visual lists of available observable sign words.
